WEISS/MANFREDI Projects Featured at Seoul Biennale
WEISS/MANFREDI is thrilled to present two projects at the 4th Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism’s Guest Cities Exhibition, which focuses on the theme “Land Architecture, Land Urbanism.”
In consideration of balancing between the density of the city and the enhancement of public spaces, WEISS/MANFREDI’s exhibition kiosk features Seattle Olympic Sculpture Park and Hunter’s Point South Waterfront Park. Both projects connect cities to their waterfront, implementing flood protection while restoring natural habitats and offering open space for the broad public.
Our architectural preoccupation with a more synthetic potential of converging social, infrastructural, and ecological territories has been intensified by experience with the waterfront cities of Seattle and New York. In these cities, the sites are almost completely defined by transportation and flooding challenges.
By weaving architecture, landscape, and infrastructure together, we imagine an alchemy that transcends the limits of the singular architectural object and looks instead for opportunities to create connections and invent new waterfront territories for public life.
The Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism was first launched in 2017 to address urban and architecture-related challenges resulting from rapid urban growth in one of the world’s most densely populated cities.

와이스/만프레디는 “땅의 도시, 땅의 건축” 이라는 주제로 진행되는 제 4회 서울도시건축비엔날레의 게스트 시티전에 두 개의 프로젝트를 소개할 수 있어 매우 기쁩니다. 시애틀 올림픽 조각공원과 헌터스 포인트 사우스 공원은 고밀도화되는 도시와 공공 공간 사이의 균형을 고려한 결과물로써 와이스/만프레디의 전시 키오스크에 소개됩니다. 이 두 프로젝트는 도시를 수변공간과 연결하며 자연 환경의 복원과 홍수대비를 구현하고 많은 대중에게 개방된 공간을 제공합니다.
저희는 사회적, 인프라적 그리고 생태적인 경계들이 합쳐지는 잠재력에 건축적인 관심사가 있으며, 이는 시애틀과 뉴욕에 있는 수변공간 도시의 경험으로 강화되어 보여졌습니다. 위의 도시들은 대부분 그 장소들이 교통 및 홍수 관련 문제로 인해 정의되고 있습니다.
건축과 조경, 기반 시설을 함께 엮음으로써, 저희는 단일한 건축적인 오브젝트의 한계를 넘어서는 연금술적인 모습을 상상하고 그 연결들을 만들어 낼 뿐아니라 오히려 공공의 생활을 위한 새로운 수변공간의 경계를 창조할 수 있는 기회로 생각합니다.
2017년 시작한 서울도시건축비엔날레는 급속한 도시 성장에서 파생된 다양한 도시적 건축적인 이슈들을 다룹니다.
